FRIED (-Biss), MIRIAM
FRIED (-Biss), MIRIAM (1946– ), Israeli violinist. Born in Romania, Fried was brought to Israel at the age of two. She studied with Alice Fenives-Rosenberg at the Tel Aviv Rubin Academy, and pursued her training with Gingold at Indiana University (1966–67), and with Galamian at the Juilliard School (1967–69). Fried won the Paganini Geneval Competition in 1968 and the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Competition in Brussels in 1971. She is noted for her maturity of approach and vibrant expression, intelligent and perceptive musicianship as well as spirited brilliance of technique. She appeared as a soloist with many of the principle world orchestras, as a recitalist, and as a chamber music artist. She is a member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet and has collaborated with such distinguished artists as isaac stern , pinchas zukerman , Garrick Ohlsson, and her husband, violinist/violist Paul Biss. In 1986 she joined the faculty of Indiana University. From 1993 she served as artistic director of the Ravinia Institute, one of the leading summer programs for young musicians. -BIBLIOGRAPHY: Grove online; Baker's Biographical Dictionary (1997).
